Creatures of fantasy

幻想種 - Gensoushu

Phantasm races or legendary creatures

A term for those non-humans that are creatures of legends, rather than a separate ranking for beasts. Creatures that can only be found in fantasy. Encompasses demi-humans such as fairies and giants as well as monsters such as dragons and Oni. Unlike demons, these are active and not passive entities.

Just as magi gain power through the accumulation of knowledge, phantasm races gain power with age. But, while a magus is limited to a lifespan of a mere 500 years for amassing their thaumaturgy, phantasm races have lived since ancient times. A mystery of only 500 years is no match for them. In fact, their very existence can be said to be on the level of magic.

The longer they live, the more they grow to be farther away from the world. A phantasm race that reaches the level of a mythical beast is shifted to the "back side" of the world. Currently, the ones remaining are only those that have lived in units of centuries instead of millennia. Modern thaumaturgy is incapable of reproducing mysteries of this kind of scale.

Einnashe, Rider's pegasus (which had come from the age of Gods), the Unicorn from which the 7th Scripture was created from, and the Oni that the Tohno's and the Kishima's are descended from fall into the category of phantasm races.

Monsters

魔獣 - Majuu

A general term for those animals that do not belong to any normal species heirarchy. As is the case with creatures of fantasy in general, their bodies have to be at least possible in an organic sense.

The older they are, the stronger. Get past a certain age and they advance up in the ranks.

Broken down into four categories: monstrous beasts, mythical beasts, holy beasts, and divine beasts (both holy and divine may actually be the same). The only ones that can be used as familiars are the monstrous-type.

The majority of monsters are chimeras and while there are still monsters living in uncivilized lands, mythical beasts and those of higher rank have shifted outside of the (probably perceptual) world because of those very characteristics.

Mythical level creatures can't be harmed by the mere likes of common thaumaturgy. Even an Excalibur cloaked in an Invisible Air (from a weakened Saber) can't normally break through the dragon-level type of defense put up by Rider's pegasus.

Also includes oni and dragon types.

Gorgon

ゴルゴン

Medusa's incarnation as a giant one-eyed man-eating monster. Post-death role as a gorgon would be in decreasing the numbers of man.

Divine bulls

神牛 - Shingyuu

Divine-ranking bulls that make up part of the summoned Gordius Wheel. The bulls that were offered up to Zeus way back when.

Einnashe

アイナッシェ

An 800 year-old sentient forest. The attributes of the forest were initially thought to be due to a Reality Marble, but the truth was that the forest matured to the level of a phantasm race by absorbing the blood of a Dead Apostle.

Pegasus

天馬 - Tenba

Rider's pegasus. Normally not as powerful as Rider's pegasus since that one lived since the age of the gods (power-rank is the same as the mythical-class). In the lowest of the 4-ranks, generally in the lowest rank (monstrous). A pegasus that has matured to mythical status is impervious to modern thaumaturgy and even attacks from Invisible Air.

Docile creatures usually. The one that Rider summons won't actually go out and fight unless Rider uses Bellerophon.

Unicorn

一角馬 - Ikkakuba

Has the power to purify the souls of humans. The horn of a unicorn was used to create Seven.

Kishu

鬼種 - Kishu

The Oni races of Japan. Creatures symbolized by inferno and scorching heat. The source of the inhuman blood in the Kishima and Tohno lines.

Blood-suckers

吸血種 - Kyuuketsushu

The general name of those that drink the blood of the same species. Includes Dead Apostles and True Ancestors. The target of the Church are vampires, not blood suckers; in other words Dead Apostles and True Ancestors. Therefore, the blood drinking animals of South America or disembodied vampiric heads from the continent or whatever are ignored.
Points middle finger at a certain somebody. Now shouldn't you be sighing in relief, Akiha?

Blood worms

吸血虫 - Kyuuketsuchuu

What Zouken became.

Dragon race

竜種 - Ryuushu

The greatest of the phantasm races, regardless of type. Categorically treated as a mythical-class beast for summoning purposes. Has characteristics of the other types of monsters and have freely intermixed with humans in the past. Merely have to breathe to generate Prana. Dragons have yet to appear in a Type-Moon work, but the defensive level of Rider's pegasus is around the level of dragons. A dragon god also apparently lived in Miongawa before and taught martial arts to the monks of Ryuudouji to pass time.

Chimera

キメラ

The most common of monsters. Monstrous rank.

Primate Murder

プライミッツ・マーダー

The beast of Gaia. The primate killer. A white beast. The hound of Altrouge. As it has the absolute right of killing over man, it's counted among the most powerful. Looks like a white dog and only obeys Altrouge. Not an Apostle, but is counted among the 27 as it has began to drink the blood of humans in imitation of its master.
Requires 7 Counter Guardians (the basis of Servants) to control.
Altrouge can be said to be an even greater monster than the Crimson Moon with this at her side.

Demi-Humans

亜人 - Ajin

Giants, fairies, and dwarves.

Fairies

妖精 - Yousei

Multiple different types of these. Some possess abilities to remove memory or disrupt the processes behind memory and recall. Normally invisible to the eyes of people in the current world but those that have reached the magnitude of being able to be perceived (by humans) are what are called elementals (or maybe you could even say elves; well, in either case, existences that are on a magnitude way way way beyond human notion). Whether or not Kurokiri Satsuki actually met real fairies is unknown. Complete lack of human values. And of course, the creators of Avalon and Excalibur.

The fairies in Rakkyo weren't real fairies but just those that were made by having lower-class spirits possess the mental image of a fairy. Not nearly as powerful, but as they're based on real fairies, they have some of those powers.

Transcendents

超越種 - Chouetsushu

A term for elementals, divine spirits, True Ancestors, anything on a totally different scale of existence from mankind. Extensions of the world created in a form that is divorced from nature itself to protect it from a resource-stealing mankind.

Also includes Dead Apostles, although they are considered "flawed". Might include Heroic Spirits, might not.

Probably ought to fall under demi-humans, but elementals don't necessarily take human-form.

Dragons are also counted among Transcendents.

Spirits

Spirits are basically everywhere. However, most of these are the ones that no living person can perceive/sense, unless they have a special affinity with spiritual creatures. Consequently, since they can't be physically perceived, they are generally harmless to normal people. The ones that can be perceived are a different story. But even still, current science isn't capable of producing weapons that can affect them and current thaumaturgy isn't capable of reproducing these kinds of mysteries.

Described as phenomena (while the greater types are indestructible phenomena). Well, at least the higher ones anyway.

The higher types rarely are able to act as they please.
See Scathach and Creatures of Fantasy.

Elemental

精霊 - Seirei

The general term for the spiritual bodies of animals and nature that still remain in the world as well as those spirits made and processed by human intention (Guardian Spirits/ Heroic Spirits). Lower-class spirits such as ghosts and apparitions are not included in this category. Manifestations of the will of the planet such as nature spirits, animal spirits, etc. and do not necessarily have a human form. Just like all other spirits, are not normally perceivable.

Elementals actualize themselves through the use of a shell of human images, but what's inside was something that had already existed and has completely different values and reasoning than human beings. A fairy that reaches the scale of being perceivable to a human becomes an elemental and elemental-class incarnation become possible. True Ancestors would fall into the category of an incarnated elemental.

Users of Marble Phantasms and Reality Marbles. Marble Phantasms are used to form their dwellings (otherworldly, but ultimately still located in the world and with elements of nature). As a result, humans can occasionally find their way into those areas.

Elementals can become demons.

The term elemental more or less includes the following, but by itself, usually implies forces of nature (and not divine, holy, or heroic) instead of forces of humanity. The Lady of the Lake, True Ancestors, or what not would be better called elementals instead of any of the other special categories.

Additional note: Spirits cannot form contracts with other spirits. Caster was able to because of her own knowledge as a magus; however, the results are poorer and more ineffective than under conventional circumstances. Only something of this world (physical body or physical being) can truly link a higher spirit to this world. Even then, the incarnated spirit cannot form contracts with the other spirit unless the knowledge already exists. Forming a contract with a higher existence also means that the power source for the contract would act as a tremendous strain; some implications of possible death in even Shiki starting up a contract with Len.

Divine Spirits

神霊 - Shinrei

A phenomenon.
The highest class of elementals, but one who's existence is desired by both humanity and the world. A copy/manifestation of a natural phenomenon given form by human worship. Divine Spirits that are no longer worshiped become elementals.

True Ancestors

真祖 - Shinso

Really big fairies; extensions of nature that are on a magnitude large enough to be perceived by human beings.

A unique kind of race among blood suckers. Characteristically close to elementals. As the planet didn't have a direct means of self-defense against human beings, it had to create them: beings that can be said to be the extensions of nature.

Modeled physically and mentally in form after humans under the principle that it would be best for them to resemble the beings they rule over. But in their creation, there was a flaw, a vampiric impulse; probably due to a flaw that the referenced original, the Crimson Moon, had.

All True Ancestors have the desire to drink the blood of those that they should be controlling. To control that impulse, they are exhausting their own mental energies. While possessing the ability to change the world according to their "thoughts", those "thoughts" are almost completely being used to restrain themselves.

There is a limit to how much they can control themselves. Unable to resolve their vampiric impulse, those desires accumulate to the point that it soon becomes impossible for them to restrain themselves through their own power. Those True Ancestors that are unable to restrain that desire fall into sleep eternally. This could be said to be the life-span of those that could live forever.

Among them are those that have lost to their desires and drink the blood of humans indiscriminately. The power of fallen Ancestors are overwhelming to the point that it is said to be impossible to destroy them through the power of humans.

As the will of humanity had no involvement in their generation, they are not Divine Spirits. Those that are wished by the world but not wished by humanity have lived in hiding and decreased in number. A Counter Force of the world with a definite form.

The number of True Ancestors had declined with the years and by the 12th century, the time Arcueid was born, their numbers had declined to up to 100 single entities. The majority of these were killed by Arcueid when she went berserk.

Normally True Ancestors that are generated (occur) naturally, but Arc (the only one of them) was extracted artificially by the other True Ancestors.

Further, at the moment, there is only one successful case of a child being born between a human and a True Ancestor.

Holy Spirits

聖霊 - Seirei

A higher class of elementals. Not much is really known about them, other than the fact that even a Guardian Spirit can reach this rank. Probably similar to Heroic Spirits, in that there is a human base.

Nature Spirits

自然霊 - Shizenrei

A spirit of nature. Much in the sense of plants, soil, jewels, etc. Said to form easily in those ores that had been sleeping beneath the surface for many years.

Jinn

ジン - Jin

The elemental spirits in the Islamic world. They fly in the air, are invisible, and are the cause of much mischief. If they want to show themselves to the eyes of man, their smoke and cloud-like gas body forms to manifest into a solid body, and preferably take on the body of an ogre with a dog-like face with a cat-like back and have been known to also take on the forms of beautiful men and women or the forms of snakes and other such beasts.

But....pretty much irrelevant to Kinoko World, with the one exception that True Assassin's one spell is meant to be used as protection against them.

Animal Spirits

動物霊 - Doubutsurei

The spirits of animals.

Kitsune and Inukami

狐、犬神 - Kitsune, inukami

The foxes and dog spirits of Japan. Back in old Japan, the mentally unbalanced had been thought to have been possessed by these critters.

According to Kaie, the alternate persona the people wear when handing over the rights to the ego to the personality derived from the possession state is usually going to be those of animals for the Japanese.

The western equivalent of the demon possession phenomenon. In these cases, there is the definite will of cursing the victim involved unlike the "traffic accidents" that the western demon possessions are.

In popular fiction, these kinds of spirits could be used in sorcery.

NEKO Spirit

ネコ精霊

Neko Arc. 'Nuff said. Has the ability to make Nrvnqsr look like a complete moron.

Guardian Spirits

守護精霊 - Shugoseirei

Generally, the merging of a human spiritual body to a nature/animal spirit by human means and intent to turn it into a spirit that has human values. Are generally considered lower than regular elementals, but there are cases when they've reached the rank of Holy Spirit. Of course, in order for their spiritual body to materialize, they require Prana that most people don't have.

Also, probably includes Heroic Spirits.

Speaking of which, a materialized Seven has some very impressive offensive and defensive abilities (long/medium range attacks like charging forward clad in spiraling Prana or a fan-shaped light beam covering 80% of the screen, and a negative element attack canceling Fountain of Lourdes, etc.), but fighting ability (combos, chainnable attacks, etc) isn't as great. But otherwise, if put into a fighting game, the perfect character. But then again, she's weak against physical attacks (ie, Ciel's Black Keys do twice damage). Also, the Scripture can't be used when Seven is materialized.

Heroic Spirits

英霊 - Eirei

A phenomenon and type of elemental. Basically, the elemental force of humanity.

A word that had had also been used to designate those heroes who died on the battlefield. In other words, dead soldiers. But in this case, better thought simply as dead heroes.

Those who accomplished great deeds during life and became objects of reverence and lore after death. The greatest entities that exist as a force "that protects humanity" and are categorically closer to elementals than wraiths. While elementals are a power that uses "images" created by humans to serve as a container to materialize, what's inside that container for Heroic Spirits is also strung together by the hopes and wishes of mankind. Among the Heroic Spirits, there are those of legends, those that actually existed, and those that remain unknown.

Of course, since there are so many crises going on in the modern era and being solved in the blink of an eye, nowadays nobody is really fit in the grand body of humanity to be called a "hero", at least in respects to those from the past.

Normally, Heroic Spirits are summoned as pure power. Receiving a form and a mind similar to what they were back when they were alive is limited only to the Fuyuki Grail War. Generally when Heroic Spirits are summoned, they're used in Kuchiyose or oracles (as in power is channeled through a medium who then makes prophetic statements or what not).

From the 3rd Heaven's Feel, spirits that aren't technically Heroic Spirits (such as the 5th Heaven's Feel's Rider and Caster) have been summoned. As long as the spirit has a side that is also like a Heroic Spirit, they are summoned, with the obvious limitations of the Greater Holy Grail.

Basic powers are not sufficient to contend against powerful thaumaturgy and mysteries, but their Noble Phantasms can allow them to even destroy higher ranking spirits. While having attributes that are similar to elementals due to divinity, worship (wishes), or contracts with the world, they are/were fundamentally human. A Heroic Spirit will not become a god just by worship, however. Normally exist as neutral personality-less power that can be tapped into. Located in the Throne of Heroes, a different plane of existence separated from the cycle of transmigration (i.e. time). Once incorporated into the world system, they are impossible to erase/destroy, unless an error/paradox occurs that becomes too complicated for the world to support. And even so, this doesn't guarantee that they'll cease to exist; they will continue to exist, no matter what happens.

Copies/emanations/projections are sent out from the Throne of Heroes across all times. What is gained and learned from the emanation is not carried on over to the Heroic Spirit to prevent any paradoxes in what ought to be a completed/perfected/finished being. However, the record of what happened is returned to (or rather, has always been in) the Throne, as well as the power that was sent out to solve the problem. This applies to all Heroic Spirits, not just Archer.

Arthur's soul is still alive and not in the Throne yet as she is not a Heroic Spirit. Which is why she carries on the direct memories instead of a record of what she did each time until she obtains a Holy Grail. In her case, she is more or less frozen in her time and what she experiences each time is like a dream to the body in her time line. As she's binded to that, she's still considered "dead" in the modern world, meaning she won't age, can't take surgery, etc., just like other Servants. Restoration of the soul itself (as opposed to bringing a "dead" person back to life through the use of time travel, parallel worlds, and denial of nothingness; the result is still the same but the process and operating principles are different) as a being that's part of the current world time line is only possible through the completed materialization of the soul.

While modern weapons are powerful, those people who use modern weapons mainly are somewhat difficult to be put in the Heroic Spirit category. The greatest advantage of modern weapons is that "anyone can use them with the right training". But see, the thing behind that is that because of that, it's hard for them to become "one sole existence". These are what people call faceless heroes. If there is a hero that has on him modern weapons, what's going to be treated as the Heroic Spirit isn't the owner, an expert that anyone can become by training, but the "most excellent weapon of that era" itself. The weapon itself would have to have a soul however.

Counter Guardians

抑止の守護者 - Yokushi no Shugosha

Guardians.
Heroic spirits that are used by the world to prevent the destruction of humanity but only on the condition that those disasters had been caused by humans themselves. In other words, they are exterminators, summoned not to save lives but to take lives to guarantee the survival of the greater whole of the human species. As long as humans exist, they'll always keep running toward self-destruction, at least in the eyes of the overall group will to survive. It doesn't matter if the intentions are evil or not or if the potential benefits are good; the human counter-force will react to it, crushing it as long as it perceives it to be the cause of ruin for humanity. That's the basic nature of the system - group happiness instead of individual happiness. As Archer learned in death, the justice he was looking for was ultimately just one of the strong feeding off of the weak and then discarding them if they end up threatening the world mankind lives in.

If worshiped or divine Heroic Spirits are natural phenomenon that just happen to be beneficial to humanity, then Counter Guardians are a strictly human phenomenon.

Generally summoned as mindless "power" and only after a disaster has happened with the intent of containing it. Cutting off an arm to save the rest of the body is the operating principle. Whether or not they take a form is unknown. According to Archer, becoming a Counter Guardian is the same thing as becoming a force of "nothing". Sent out by the world, but a guardian of humanity. Divinity or worship can keep one from being allocated into the Counter Guardian slot. The only Heroic Spirit that's a Counter Guardian in Fate is Archer.

Seven of these are used to control Primate Murder.

Some hinting that only Counter Guardians can be summoned "backwards" in time, probably because they're nameless (or are just a representation of a primitive or already innate defensive mechanism).

Reverse Heroes

反英雄 - Haneiyuu

Those who are hated by people, whose evil actions save people as a result, who clarifies good through evil. While being cursed, they are saviors that became worshiped. Of course, pure Reverse Heroes don't exist. At best, they reach the stage of being those who did good while being evil. Like heroes, they have served mankind when they were alive. However, it was neither the intended result nor were they ever appreciated for it. A target of continuous human hatred and disgust. Generally speaking, unwilling sacrifices, those that were viewed as evil but the end result whether by victimization or actual results saved the world. Of course, there is no such thing as a pure reverse hero, because as time goes on, that hatred and disgust is replaced with feelings of appreciation or guilt. Technically speaking, Archer is both a Counter Guardian and a Reverse Hero. Assassin and Archer fall in this category. Rider, Caster aren't really normal Heroic Spirits but that doesn't mean they are Reverse Heroes.

In addition.

That which is born by humanity, but develop without its help. This contradiction is what results in the creation of a being that is exempted from the pressure of all Counter Forces, an "enemy of the world",

Lower-class spirits

下級霊 - Kakyuurei

Indistinct entities that can be made into a distinct identity by having them "possess" an image. Generally, formless.

Wraith

亡霊 - Bourei

Human spirits. In the context of the game, the spirits that serves as the cores (candidates) of those heroic spirits that never existed as individuals; basically the "I'm not really this hero, I just look like him" sort of Servant. Generally, their name as a heroic spirit isn't their true name, which has been lost. According to the "actor" playing the "role" of Kojirou, just a ghost that hadn't made his own name known.

If a hero in a legend doesn't actually exist, then a wraith with similar abilities or one that shares the same general idea/concept/title is used as the basis for the heroic spirit or one of the many candidates for that heroic spirit. In Fate,
Hassan Sabbah is one of these. Hassan is actually a name taken on by the leaders of an organization of assassins. Each individual Hassan's own background before becoming a Hassan is lost historically and thus, there are no memories before they became Hassan. The core personality of Sasaki Kojirou is also an example; there are a number of other nameless swordsmen that bear enough similarities to the legendary Kojirou.

The word bourei more or less connotes a ghost that's still remaining in the material plane because of regret, grudges, and what not; the type that tends to haunts houses, lands, and people, like say... the ghosts in Juon. It also carries the same sort of meaning that the word "spector" would have in English; something of the past that has long since stopped existing.

Stanrobe, an Ancestor whose physical body was destroyed, is referred to as being the 1st wraith.

Apparitions

浮遊霊 - Fuuyuurei

AKA 残留思念 - Leftover thoughts. Those spirits who are nothing more than the "remaining thoughts" of the deceased. The leftover fragments of a departed soul that tend to group together with other fragments to form a formless entity that has nothing more than the primitive will to live. The kind of ghosts most people tend to think of, but generally harmless since no one can see them. In essence the projection of past records of a person stored in the environment. The ghosts at the Fujou building, the "fairies" Ouji Misaya used, and Len are examples of these. Or to be more accurate, the fairies and Len were made from these kinds of spirits. Apparitions can touch and possess those with spiritual abilities, but as long as they have a strong hold over their own ego (particularly going to be those who are actually using their abilities as a profession), they won't be taken over.

Primates

霊長 - Reichou
A combination of characters representing superiority and chief-ness. Eh well. Basically, meaning "the most superior", somewhat in the same sense as the word "primate" - prime ones.

Homo Sapiens

人間 - Ningen

The odd duckling.

"Half-blood"

混血 - Konketsu
A human being that has some inhuman blood in them. Specifically, in the case of Japan, these are recognized as distortions and not people when the unearthly side of their blood becomes thick. Labeled as "deviants" and for the first time becomes a target for punishment. In these conditions, as they possess human aspects, the Kinbaku no Mikotonori (Edict of Binding) and other Houjutsu have no effect, and thus because they can utilize the powers of the powers of the unearthly, a human body cannot stand up to them. As a result, when they have become deviants, as far as the Taima are concerned, they are very powerful enemies because their spells don't work on them; that's why the Taima have trouble dealing with them in particular.

Liners

人間種 - Ningenshu
The humanity of Overcount 1999. What the old humanity had evolved to in order to adapt to the new world. Have adapted to be able to survive in the current environment, but as one could imagine, they don't have any powers that surpass normal human functions. Busy forming a nation to revive civilization and in a state of non-aggression with the A-Rays.
The future (or the past, who knows), so of course they don't exist in the present.

Ether Liners

騎士 - Kishi
Those Liners that were affected even more strongly from the effects of the traumatized environment. Uses the special weapons called knight arms. An attack-type species that can compete evenly with the A-Rays without the aid of weapons from the old age. 78 Ether Liners are registered currently.

A-Rays

亜麗百種 - Areihyakushu
The next generation primates created by a humanity that exhausted the resources of the planet. Those that were based on various species that had once existed on the planet. Those that had been greatly modified and enhanced to be able to survive on a barren world. Many different branches exist, causing the A-Ray category to be greatly broken down into 100 sub-races. Numbers 1 through 10 consist of single entity organisms; these are not populations. Among them, there are those that have human DNA and have similar bodily structures as humans would, but most of them are a mixture and an evolution of primates and different kinds of organisms.

Other

Homunculus

ホムンクルス

In alchemy, a creature birthed from the combination of human sperm and multiple substances/elements without the use of a womb. The result of not being born through normal methods means short stature, shorter life, and lacking in some parts of intellect. Reproduction functions are also gone. Not quite a human created with circuits, but rather, circuits that were born like a human being. Nature given a human body. Fragile existences, but they have power superior to that of human beings.

The concept of aging doesn't exist among them. Once born, the necessary knowledge and reason for existence are taken and imputed by nature. A perfect homunculus is an extension of nature created by the hands of man and as long as the planet's still alive, they will not die from old age. They will die if destroyed and in exchange for their potential longevity, are weak as lifeforms.

The Einzbern homunculi, even ones deemed a failure, are more powerful than magi and can even be a threat to an agent from the Association. Models based on Justica (who was a homunculus herself), such as Irisviel and Ilya share the memories and personality of the original. In a way, they're the same being.

Unlike normal homunculi, Ilya has aged normally up until a certain point. Also, unlike others, she apparently does have a life span. After any of the routes where she survives, she has only one year left to live.

Also, homunculi bodies are apparently made from ether (at the very least, Leysritt is made from ether it seems).

Probably ought to be considered a demi-human type, but they don't seem to be considered one of the phantasm races.

Vampires

Part of the aforementioned bloodsucker category.

Ghoul

屍食鬼 - Shishokuki

Corpse eater. If a Dead Apostle leaves its own blood in the corpse of its victim, that person won't be able to completely die. The brain of the corpse of the victim, unable to completely die, after several years in the graveyard, will rot and its soul will be completely fixed to the corpse. This is when the corpse becomes a ghoul. One in a hundred, but depending on the potential of the body, there will be leaps and bounds (rare ones though).

Living Dead

リビングデッド - Living Dead

A ghoul that restores its decayed body after eating the flesh of other corpses to replenish its flesh. Weaker than the familiars of vampires, but possessing a mind of their own and their own soul puts them on a different level than a mere puppet.

Vampire

吸血鬼 - Kyuuketsuki
One of the living dead that regains its human intelligence after some several years. 1 out of 10,000. Kill the father that was the Dead Apostle, and the vampire moves up into that place.

Dead Apostles

死徒 - Shito

The blood-suckers that make up the majority of the vampires among the blood-suckers.

Contrary to popular opinion, conventional weapons can do damage. The problem though is that their reflexes are superhuman so they're able to react immediately and dodge after seeing the bullet. If a handheld gun is going to be used, it'd better not be point-based like a pistol but one that covers an area (like a shotgun for instance).

Originally the emergency rations of the True Ancestors. Humans prepared for them in the event that they were unable to hold back their blood-sucking impulse. Yes, drinking their bloods and putting them under their control so they won't escape.

Those humans who have had their blood sucked become blood-suckers like the True Ancestors. In the beginning, the blood-sucking of the Dead Apostles was to survive. To serve the long-living True Ancestors, the Dead Apostles also had to last just as long.

The Dead Apostles who began to drink the blood of others started to feel superiority in those actions and enhanced their own powers. They reinforced their own minds in order to escape from the control of the True Ancestors and fled to the world of man. To preserve themselves, they repeated their consumption. This was the origin of the Dead Apostles and the beginning of blood-sucking humans.

The Dead Apostles that escaped from the True Ancestors the earliest are called the 27 Ancestors. Since then, some of those factions of those 27 changed leadership through the generations while some are still reigning as Ancestors. Those from the missing numbers (the ones unlisted) have either been executed/sealed by the Church or are atoning for their sins. Those Ancestors sealed are stored in coffins of the Church, but since they can't be totally destroyed, they're under eternal imprisonment. Those factions of sealed Ancestors are still in good shape and are either gaining strength to take back their Ancestor or destroy him. The reason why the 27 still remain in some form despite being constantly destroyed over and over again is because one Ancestor acts as the prophet of the apostles, sending news of when they would die, giving them time to hastily prepare a heir.

The majority of the 27 Ancestors are able to use Reality Marbles. The power of the Dead Apostle is dependent on the power of the one who sucked their blood. Further, those within the first ten ranks cannot be defeated by normal concepts. The reason being that those who live in fantasy can only be defeated by fantasy that is greater than them; which is also the general rule for mysteries on the phantasm level.

The current king of the Dead Apostles is the White Wing Lord, Trhvmn Ortenrosse, the first of the servants of the Crimson Moon and a magus from the age of the gods, some 4000 years ago.

Demons

悪魔 - akuma

AKA, incarnated pandemonium or true demon.

NOT one of the phantasm races, but passive entities whose materialized forms are not biologically possible.

The sixth imaginary substance/element. A real-life illusion given form by the aggregation of ideas of humans. A passive entity called forth by the wishes of human beings. Evidently, a type of elemental. These probably are the same as the incarnated demon. In order to materialize, a form must be created for them by humans. The magus definition of demon apparently doesn't draw a line between real and fake, unlike those affiliated with the Church.

A demon that can only manifest itself in the form of a human is nothing more than just a weird human-like figure. Because people crown others with the title of "demon" just by that, the original definition is mistaken. If God is perfect all-knowing and all-powerful, demons are the incompetent and nonsensical (in other words, the "image" of demons is absurd and non tangible; more abstract and ridiculous as opposed to the millenia spent in refining the image of God) phenomenon of human ignorance. Melting/destroying one is meaningless because the demon is something that had already been melting/falling apart.

The Church definition makes a specific distinction regarding demons. Their demon is a "true demon", as opposed to impostors like those with Agonist Disorder. Creatures that had been used by God long before man would give them names. Not impostors that become a unique identity by wearing human thoughts nor an organism like us human beings (who might just happen to have circuits), but a "thing" whose entire bodily functions exist to draw in disruptions. Able to use powerful thaumaturgy surpassing those of humans; qualities are also similar to the Einzbern Holy Grails. It seems that Angra Mainyu actually became a type of incarnated demon in hollow ataraxia.

In retrospect, the impostors the Church is referring to are probably going to be phantasm races or people with Agonist Disorder.

Being imaginary, they can't kill a definite object unless they reduce a "something" into a "nothing" by completely covering it. Something to do with quantum mechanics apparently.

An imaginary creature can take form through the payment of emotions; even masquerading as a human being.

Horrors

怪魔 - Kaima
Creatures that aren't Phantasm Beasts nor spiritual bodies, but ones that exist in a dimension with entirely different natural laws. Large, having neither a discernable torso nor appendages; can best be described as a a bundle of countless tentacles. At what appears to be the base part of the countless tentacles is a circular mouth-like opening marked with shark-like blades. Summoned via the power of Prelati's Spellbook using blood and flesh in the material plane to form their bodies.

Mukuro

骸 - Mukuro
Limited to the looped world in hollow ataraxia. Looks like the barely formed shadow of a large wolf-man. What all Angra Mainyus become at the end of the 4th day.

Weak in comparison to the characters in Fate/stay night, but strong enough to easily kill a normal person in seconds. A person trained in martial arts might last for just a few more seconds longer. But the real problem isn't one against one, but the fact that there is no limit to them. Void (barely) shaped into the form of a wolf.

According to Caren, these are similar to demons, although concentration of spiritual disruption is lower.

Type of spiritual disruption caused is to "create the same kind of monster".

Karyou Kaie

迦遼海江

A real demon. Supposedly. Either that, or a demon master (those who are able to command demons) like Merem Solomon.

If one of his limbs is loaned out, it can return to him on its own, even if the one using it dies.

Hatred

憎悪

A blind black dog and the left arm of Karyou Kaie. Made from Kaie's hatred to give him a human form. When loaned out, it will react to the hatred of the user. One meter long.

Delight

歓喜

The right arm of Karyou Kaie. Made from Kaie's delight to give him a human form.

Sorrow

悲哀

A shark-like creature and one of Karyou Kaie's legs. Made from Kaie's sorrow to give him a human form.

????

????

Unknown. One of Karyou Kaie's legs.

Merem's demons

The Four Great Demon Beasts. The familiars and limbs of the Dead Apostle, Merem Solomon. Each one is said to be equal to an Ancestor. Demons given form through demonition, Merem's power as a planet terminal.

If a Reality Marble is the painting over of reality by the individual's internal state, Merem's four demons might be retribution towards reality from the world of fairy tales, discarded by mankind. The demons are the doodle of a boy named Merem given form. Therefore, whenever they appear, the landscape they're in loses its realism.

While each are divine beasts class imaginary creatures, all of them are creatures that Merem "literally" imagined.

Don't belong to any species in the world, however, they are homages to all species in the world.

Merem would like to name them but "demons musn't be given names so easily". Hence, they don't have names. Giving them names would mean that they'd really become free of him.

Yes, while the demon beasts are said to be Merem's arms and legs, the reality is that the demons are each only supplying him arms and legs. If Merem disappears, the demons won't disappear until destroyed, however, if they disappear, Merem will lose his limbs and will have to reimagine them again.

The great demon beasts consider Merem to be their creator but he is not absolutely necessary. However, since they'll be re-imagined even after they're destroyed as long as Merem's around, they seem to have indebted loyalty to the man.

As they're fundamentally independent beings, it should be noted that any such powers the demons have (such as taking on the appearance of any person) is only the ability of that limb and not Merem's. Merem creates an independent existence that has the ability to disguise itself as a human being, and what executes it is only that "limb". Even if Merem wishes for himself to become an adult, to have arms and legs, he himself can't transform.

Further, once the image is already made, they move on their own. While they will listen to Merem's words, he can't control how they are or how they feel. While something still floating around in the mind can constantly be changed and modified, once put into form (as a statue or a picture for example) and let out into the world, they cannot be changed.

Indeed. The only thing remaining in the hands of the author once let outside are the property rights.

Also note that while the demons are tied together by strong bonds with Merem, it's not as if Merem can send telepathic messages to them from a distance. For example, with the king of rats, rats are often used as messengers to send and receive messages.

Demon of the right leg

Class: King of Earth

Black dog of destruction. The bell of ending. The beast of god. Whale dog.

The demon that Merem preferably drags along with him, a demon specializing in conquering and destruction.
Doesn't have any special abilities, but just being an enormous mass some 200 meters long is more than enough for it to be established as a "demon".

Merem really wanted it to look more like an adorable puppy, but Merem's skill as an artist is a bit slanted.

The "leg" demons don't have any sort of human like intelligence and will act according to Merem's orders. Apparently because he's a dog lover, the "right leg" listens to what he says more than the "left leg".

Demon of the left leg

Class: King of Sky
An aggregation of all animals. A king of beasts swimming in the sky.
An enormous demon on the same scale as the "right leg". Contains various animals in its tile membrane. Appearance suggests its an air fortress, but out of perhaps the fate of those who fly in the skies, once those wings touch the surface, it will be destroyed.
The most beautiful of the demons Merem imagined.
While the "right leg" is specialized for annihilation warfare, this one is specialized for single combat against a mega-class enemy. ...But generally, it crashes after dealing critical injuries and then disperses.
Treated like as a weapon with too expensive a cost by Merem.

Demon of the right arm

Class: Lady Windup
An enormous heap of rubbish turned mannequin, Sword-chan.
A living gear statue around some 10 meters tall.

The only one of the 4 demons actively undergoing model changes (more like fashion changes).

Basically the downer-type of non-energetic goddess.
Normally, she covers her face with a mask. Rarely takes it off. Also a mobile shrine. Stomach region has stairs and an entrance.
Since it's an idol, it only has bare minimum intelligence, and is pretty hardheaded. To give an example, say, Famicon BASIC level computing power (1980s level stuff).

A problem maker that can't quite delete inputed commands, kind of like a printer that won't stop printing even after the cancel button was pressed.

A demon symbolic of weaponry, but as a rule, this is limited to
weapons that "the individual can possess". The design changes lightly along with the development of weapons, but it's settled in the configuration around 100 years ago.

Rarely pops up since Merem doesn't like taking her out. Something like the Windam of the Ultra Seven. Popular character, but doesn't appear too often.

Demon of the left hand

Class: King of rats
The hero and idol of the rat world. A demon with absolutely no battle oriented abilities, but has transformation abilities allowing him to completely imitate something as long as it's human. Has the status of priest in human society, and, as the 3rd most beautiful rat in the world, has popular support in narrow communities living in narrow spaces underground, on ceiling boards, in drainage conduits, and behind furniture.

The "Left Hand" itself is fond of its priest identity and works daily at a relaxed pace for the sake of Merem, humans, and rats.

"...That's funny? Say, I didn't design you to like humans did I?"
"My humble self will be on the side of humans as long as there's pizza."
As Mr. Cheese Lover had said to Merem before.

Also, each time the rats point out the little contradiction and ask,
"Just what part of you is a "Great" Demon Beast?"
He looks apologetically while troubling himself on how to answer. Or not.

The representative of Merem, who's still stuck in the form of a boy. While he can change into many other humans, he normally takes on the form of a kind old priest.

If seen by a high-class exorcist, his facade will be undone and will return to his original form.

And no. Merem isn't the one transforming. The rat is. The rat is the only one that can transform and it can't transform anybody else. Just itself. Rat man. Not rat with the mystical ability to transform other people into shotas. Use the non-Reality Marble version of common-sense (context).

Demon possession

悪魔憑き

Real

The demons in these cases are referred to as 真性の悪魔, but whether or not they're the same as the true demons (真性悪魔) mentioned above is unknown.

A natural (or rather unnatural) phenomenon of spiritual disruptions in the Western world that possesses physically fit, righteous people for reasons beyond human understanding. The breeding grounds for these disruptions is a healthy physical body. Those in poor physical condition will not be possessed.

Similar to the Japanese Kitsune-tsuki or Inukami-tsuki. A human is taken over by an inhuman "something" and broken from the inside. The conditions for these cover too wide a range to be put into a system, so the western equivalents are mostly produced from the concept called "demons". Also dissimilar from the Japanese equivalents in that while there is the will to curse involved in animal spirit possessions (as in somebody sics them on the victim), Western "curses" don't have that intention to them . It could be likened to a traffic accident type of phenomenon.

The initial stages are marked by changes in behavior by peeling away the layers of the mind's ability to reason like a human being. Towards the latter stages, the demon attempts to reenact its formless body through the human body. The transformation process begins with incredible changes in the operations of the body and can lead to the mutation of a portion of the body. The degree of the mutation depends on the rank of the demon. Of course, normally most human bodies can't handle that mutation, thankfully enough. There are those people that can withstand these types of physical mutations. While having the design plans of their soul being eaten, they make use of the "thing" eating them. Demon masters, for instance.

A demon that has fully matured can result not only in the changing of the possessed but also the warping of the minds of those around him to a degree far beyond his own condition. For this reason, the places where the exorcists of the Church arrive can be likened to touring hell.

The demons in this case are naturally kind to human beings. They understand their pain and suffering and try to take it away. Generally, these demons advocate any result. From one point of view, they're on the side of human beings.

Unlike those with Agonist Disorder, these demons operate on a basis of give and take, as in, they make contracts with humans. Also, these demons are considered to be leaning towards more of the "imaginary" and can only be seen by the one who's possessed (until it takes form through the user) or the possessed becomes altered.

The Church only deals with these kinds of demons and is not concerned with the imposters. Exorcists are sent to deal with them before they have completely matured. In the event that the exorcism fails, those Executors best equipped for inquistions are sent to incinerate what became the demon.

For exorcists then, the task is to discover the demon before this happens. Unfortunately, d demons can't be seen and determined until the possessed transforms. The only person who can tell would be the one that's possessed. Demons are smart and clever enough to restrain their powerful spiritual disruptions they cause to prevent themselves from being discovered. Even experienced exorcists has trouble identifying them.

Of course, the demons popping up in DDD can be seen normally. Or at least stick around as limbs unless being used.

Agonist Disorder

アゴニスト異常症

Commonly called AD.
A mental illness that has similarities to real demon possessions. Considered to be more of a parasite that causes the overproduction of ligand. Just like real demon possessions, the fake "demons" love to target the emotionally weak. More or less, an excuse that people use to keep themselves free from sin and responsibility.

Most often only a mental illness and thus generally harmless, but occasionally can warp the human body to a degree beyond that of real demons and even grant them superhuman powers. These will have a tumor located on the "problematic" part of the body and new mechanisms reorganized by the body to deal with the problem case.

An example of one would be a person who is fixated on committing suicide. However, no matter how many times he turns his neck, he won't die. Furthermore, his eyes have properties similar to mystic eyes and will cause those who look at his eyes to have their movements synced to his own. This man's tumor was on his neck. Other examples include incredibly acidic stomach acid.

However, less than 10% of the crimes caused by those with Agonist Disorder are recognized to fall under the popular description of "demon possession" described above.

These people are generally fixated on one particular weakness/fear. They are not exactly the smartest/rational of people and can't think of anything but the "now". While they might feel guilt over what they have done, they will rationalize what they did as being something that would have happened anyway or couldn't be avoided. While the tumor can be removed, rehabilitation is almost hopeless.

Unlike real demons, they are considered to be a part of "reality".

Mostly confined to western Japan.

Aristotles - The Ultimate Ones

Eight lifeforms (not including Type Moon; apparently the inhabitants during this era were unaware of its existence) from other heavenly bodies. Beings that don't mix well with the (common sense) rules of this planet; no mind, no concepts comparable with "death", hence "destroyed" onces haven't truly "died". Will continue to operate until objective is complete.

True identity are the ultimate beings from each of the other planets. Each has the power to single-handedly exterminate the existing lifeforms on this world.
Called Aristotles by humans, but these beings do not even have the concept of names. Aristotles do not contend against each other and operate freely of each other.

Among them, there are those who learn the concept of "knowledge" from the lifeforms of this planet. Further, several Aristotles have made contact with humanity. Following the destruction of Type Saturn, the relay unit for the orders of each of the planets, the Ultimate Ones would move on into the final battle.

Confirmed physical "destruction" of 3 by humanity: Venus, Pluto, Jupiter. Saturn is later destroyed meaning that there should be two more on the surface and two remaining in the blood sky. Uranus and Neptune are described as destroying the majority of the Type Venus monitoring base which would mean that these are the ones that are probably still on the surface. Which would mean that the remaining ones in the blood sky are Mercury and Mars? Is ORT really the Ultimate One of Mercury? It's also possible that Neptune and Uranus were able to breach the cloud barrier after the destruction of Saturn.

Type Mercury

ORT.
Ultimate One of Mercury (?).
One of the pals of the Ultimate Ones appearing in Notes...but is more like one of those clumsy girls you see on anime in that it landed on Earth just one step earlier (around 5000 years) by accident. It's thought that he's closed himself off in his Crystal Valley until the promised time.

...Actually, might not really be the strongest life form that received Earth's SOS sign.

Apparently landed in South America before the Common Era. As an attack-type lifeform, boasts power on a level far beyond anything else. The former 5th Ancestor attempted to capture it and was killed in seconds. Afterwards, treated as an Ancestor when it was discovered to have vampiric like properties.

Alien entity some 40 meters tall covered with outer skin that is harder, more flexible, more temperature resistant, and sharper than any other substance on the surface.

Said that as long as the battleground is earth, it has no weakness.
In addition to the ridiculously high attack parameters of the main body, it also possesses a special ability similar to Reality Marbles - Crystal Valley.
Invasion by a horrifying but beautiful landscape.
While some magi and the 27 Ancestors control internal worlds called "Reality Marbles", the one that ORT has is on a completely different level.

ORT is a "visitor from another planet".

By just him (?) being there, the Earth is changing to the environment he lived in. That is, the rewriting of physical laws, a leaking of his "alien order/system".

If man is that which destroys the planet, then ORT is an invader that paints the earth world into an alien planet. Just movement by ORT will cause the trees around him to crystallize, forming a crystal valley (spider web).

Well, thankfully ORT's a good-for-nothing spider that doesn't intend to hurt the planet...but....well, it might just be because he's (?) not interested in invading.

But alas, of course nobody would understand the circumstances of ORTy, so bigshots from a lotta agencies try messing with (him) thinking that they'd better do something about Mr. Dangerous Lifeform as soon as possible......and end up getting annihilated instead.

Base concept being "hopeless despair". If this was an RPG, ORTy would be the hidden boss that's stronger than the last boss. "WTF man, did you losers bother to think about game balance omgwtflolz?" No, no, it's your fault for messing with him (?).

ORT just can't learn the culture of earth, but it's thought that he(?) has the ability to partially simulate the creatures he preys on. But since this is just a simulation, even if he (?) said something humanish, that'd just be a repeat of something else. If you're searching for romance, it's your personal business.

Oh, and ORT thinks that the Earth life form that had the strongest flavor to it (in an ORTish sort of way) was the former 5th Apostle.

Can't be killed by Eyes of Instant Death. Doesn't have the concept of death so you'll have to destroy it physically.

Type Venus

Ultimate One of Venus.
A carnivorous plant around 1000 meters long. Is said to have a form of a fish bearing an enormous tree on its back, but because it was hidden in the clouds, no one has accurately recorded it.

Joined the invasion somewhat later than the other Ultimate Ones and for a long time had been drifting in the clouds.

Had been harmless for a while, but after completing investigation and selection of the ideal seed bed, it finally began to descend.

True identity is an invasion type environmental cultivation forest bed that roots itself into the ground and spreads hundreds of millions of spores (angel-type predation terminals). The moment it lands on the surface while still alive signals the conclusion of the existing species.

....As it's a parasite type, it also ended up "ingesting" Liner concepts.

Which brings us to the angel. A projection. A phantasm of an angel.
Plays the guitar. Sucks at it.
A long-rage troublesome type Stand-chan (as in Jojo's) that shows up in low income-making Godo's apartment room and freeloads off of him in the name of helping out in the place.
Basically, will just stay there and not do anything.
Special power is a slight psychological healing effect. Specialty is running Godo's salary dry. Hobby is looking at the lives of the people gathered underneath Yggdrasil.

A spirited, straight forward, and naturally offbeat xxxxxxxxx in love with love.

Inputed command was earth predation, but generated answer was "I love everybody living here."

To sum up all the important points.

Type Saturn

The Cross.
A 3000 meter long cross-like Aristotles.

Outer shell is formed by light generating mineral. No other pattern.
This flying drops a rain of light from its body towards the surface.
The "rain" is a cross-like electromagnetic shockwave of 1 meter length that, at the instant of impact with the surface, will explode and destroy the surrounding area.
There are other types of cross light as well, for example, one that will bore through the surface to cause an earthquake, destroying the very land the beings of this planet live on. The countless piercing the surface in the wastelands can be said to be tomb stones themselves.

Called an aerial fortress and a leader-rank among the Aristotles within the planetary region.

Destroyed by Slash Emperor.

Type Pluto

Destroyed by the six sisters (said to be mutual destruction, although this contradicts with later statements), who confronted Pluto to prevent it from entering the planet. The blood of Pluto covered the planet and became what is known as the "blood sky", the area above the ashen sea of clouds. Said ashen clouds are thought to be a defensive membrane that the 6 sisters expanded. Inside the blood sky, the remaining two Aristotles, whose entry had been prevented, are swimming like fishes in the clouds.

Type Jupiter

The black Aristotles.
An Aristotles that appeared to the west of the continent.
A black giant several 10s of kilometers large. Form is close to that of an anthropod.

True identity is a mass of black photon gas. Theoretically, size can expand without limit. Inside the focal point of the gas is a core of unknown nature that can at the moment only be described to be a pseudo-star currently.

The "body" that is the photon gas is being emitted from that core.
Of the eight, the one that annihilated the most. Was engaged in total warfare in the western continent, but repulsed its attackers without receiving damage....Though, the concept of injuries doesn't even exist in this Aristotles, of course.

Afterwards, at the end of a battle with Ether Knights dispatched to the western continent, was sliced by Slash Emperor. Unfortunately, the core went out of control and incinerated the surface of the western continent.

Type Uranus

Unknown. Was mentioned that the majority of the Leaves of Yggdrasil (the Type Venus monitoring base turned city) was destroyed in the Type Uranus and Type Neptune firing operation.

Type Neptune

Unknown. Was mentioned that the majority of the Leaves of Yggdrasil (the Type Venus monitoring base turned city) was destroyed in the Type Uranus and Type Neptune firing operation.

Type Moon

Crimson Moon. The other title of the creature that became the model of the True Ancestors. Brunestud of the Crimson Moon.
After his destruction, the title of Brunestud was given only to those single bodies with powers close to the Crimson Moon.
There have only been 2 True Ancestors crowned with the name of Brunestud even in their long history. Note that the latter is Arc, who earned the name by materializing the Millenium Castle, which hadn't manifested itself since the previous king was destroyed 600 years ago.

Said to be the one pulling the strings behind the mess in Notes and appears as a "boss" right before the final boss. Armed with the Knight Arm "Real World"; which should be noted, is also the title of the true objective of the True Ancestors - to restore the world into its true form as a planet.

Other than having a Reality Marble and incredible power, Brunestud also holds the Noble Color of Rainbow.
